i think the reason is because you want to learn about the word of god. what he said to all the prophets and dont take other's people word for it. some people might say, the bible says this, and that.. but its always better if you read it for yourself and have knowledge of the word of god. you will learn alot abouf life, specially if you read the books of proverbs and psalms
